Lawn games can make any party more fun! They're a great way to get guests engaged and interacting with one another. But what if some of your party guests are a bit older? You might be worried that they won't be able to scamper across the lawn or spike a volleyball like the teens and 20-somethings in the crowd. But rest assured, there are ways to make lawn games safe and fun for the older adults in your life.

1. Include a more mellow game, like bocce ball.

If you want to include a more intense backyard game, like volleyball, be sure to balance it out with a more mellow game that the older adults can participate in. Bocce ball is perfect for this! It just involves tossing a few balls, which most people can do. There are no swift or sudden movements involved, and it's easy to toss the balls just a short distance, which makes the game more fair for everyone.

2. Buy some tools to make play easier.

Another way to make yard games easier for the older crowd is to purchase a few tools to modify how the game is played. A good example of this applies in bocce ball. Bending down to grab the balls off the ground can be hard on some people. A stand-up bocce ball retrieval tool can make this task a lot easier. It allows people to grab the ball while standing up, and then bring the ball up to their level without bending down at all.

3. Pair older adults with younger adults.

The older adults may be a bit intimidated to play the games if they think they will be competing against the more agile youngsters. You can make the game a bit more appealing to them by pairing older guests with younger guests. For instance, you could pass a rule that each bocce team has to include at least one person over 40, and one person under 40.

4. Relax the rules.

Finally, make sure that everyone at the party knows that the goal here is not to be too competitive. You can relax some of the rules and let some barely-passable plays go for the sake of enjoyment. Encourage an atmosphere where everyone can relax and have fun, and guests of all ages will go along with it.
